How to spot a wallet that stays flat

Almost every slim wallet is flat in the shop. What matters is whether it is still flat after three months with twelve cards and a few notes in it.

The card holder

What decides it is how the cards are held. A metal cage with a spring keeps them stacked and releases them fanned out when you push. A leather slot, by contrast, stretches over time, and then the cards start to wander.

Room for notes

A strap or a clip takes up less room than an extra stitched pocket. Folded notes need space anyway — the only question is whether the construction around them gets thicker too.

The seam at the edge

The more layers meet at the edge, the thicker the spot that presses into your trouser pocket. Wallets that look plain on the outside are usually plain for that reason.

The test

Put in what you actually carry: debit card, credit card, ID, two loyalty cards, a few notes. Then sit down with it. If it does not press at that point, it will stay flat in daily use too.
